You like that word spiffified? I think I just made it up, and I'm pretty sure it has no meaning. But the point is I'm about to tell you how I took this boring $4 tablecloth
and brought it to life!
Admittedly, this is no permanent solution. I made ours for our gender reveal party (you may have spotted it in this post), and it was perfect for the occasion. Luckily, its total cost comes in around $8, so its short life span should not be a deterrent.
If you want to make one too, you will need the following supplies:
- 1 tablecloth (I sprung for the paper/plastic lined version at Party City for $4 and think it was the perfect choice...the plastic $2 one would have been too flimsy I think, and anything else would have been too nice, although I totally would have used butcher paper if I was still teaching and had access...ok, enough about that, I think you get the point)
- streamers in your choice of colors
- double-sided tape
- scissors
That's it! Then, it's time to get to work. As you can probably tell from the first picture, I chose to make my tablecloth on the actual table it would be covering. That way, I figured, I could get a good vision of the stripes laid out. It worked well for the parts that were actually on the solid surface (the table), but the sides were a little messier (more on how I fixed that later).
I started in the middle with a streamer of my choice and just used about 5-6 pieces of tape along the length to put in place, starting on one end and finishing on the other (careful to cut off the streamer exactly where the tablecloth ended). When done with that, I started working out from the middle, a couple stripes to the right, a couple to the left. I wasn't too careful about spacing between each...just eyeballed it and went with what I liked. Here's what it looked like about halfway through.
I continued that way until the whole thing was filled in (it took me about 45 minutes in case you're curious). Once done, I did have some fixing to do though. As I mentioned earlier, the sides were not nearly as secure as I had hoped and were pulling at parts. So, I transferred my tablecloth to the kitchen floor, adjusted where necessary, and added some extra tape strips near the ends of each stripe.
Here's the final product being put to good use:
