DIY Garland

As a Jewish girl now officially celebrating Christmas, I have one self-imposed rule for my decorating: stick to silver and white. This color scheme obviously meets Christmas criteria, but also could be interperted as Hanukkah (the colors there are traditionally blue, silver, and white) or even winter, which helps ease the tiny bit of a guilty conscience I have over wholeheartedly decking my halls (fellow Jews...you get what I mean, right?). So, silver and white it is. But surprisingly, or at least to me, silver and white decor is not very easy to find. Sure, I scored tons of super cute silver and white ornaments, but when it comes to stockings, garland, tree skirts, even the star, it was much harder. Frustrated by my garland choices, I decided to try my hand at a little DIY. I'm sure my idea is not completely novel, but I am pretty pleased with the result, so I figured I would share with you what I did.

First, here were my supplies:

Pretty simple: some silver ribbon I already had on hand, one bag of silver ornaments ($1 from the Dollar Tree!), one bag of white ornaments (again $1 from the Dollar Tree), and one 15ft. silver garland ($3)...That's a grand total of $5 for all you math whizzes out there:)

With materials in hand, I got to work stringing the ornaments one at a time onto the ribbon. The ornaments each had a string on them, so I just slipped the ribbon through that tie. To secure the ornaments, I used a very technical process: I tied the ribbon where I wanted the ribbon to be....WOW, huh!?!? Here's a picture in case you're like me and need visuals to help you understand things:

Once I had tied all the ornaments to the ribbon, I took my ribbon of ornaments and twisted it with the tinsel garland to create my own custom garland. Seriously, could this be any easier? Here's what it looks like on display with our mantle:

And a close up in case you want to see that too:

So, what do you all think? Any other good DIY Christmas ideas to share?
