Fizzing Sidewalk Art

We are about ready to ditch our spring bucket list and begin work on our summer one, but before we do I wanted to share with you a fun activity we did a few weeks ago.
My kids LOVE sidewalk chalk.  Colton loves to draw animals and write names with it (well, more accurately he instructs me of what to draw), while Levi just likes to chuck it around and watch it break.  Endless fun, I tell you!  Needless to say, we play with sidewalk chalk on the regular, but one day I decided to switch it up a bit and create some sidewalk paint for them.  Making it was simple: 2 parts baking soda to one part cornstarch.  Then, stir in just enough water and food coloring to make it the right consistency and color that you want.
Once it was whipped up, I sent the kids outside to begin painting.

But the uber fun part...at least from two boys' perspective...was spraying their creations with vinegar.  Because of the baking soda in the paint, the pictures bubbled and bubbled much to their delight.

Here's a little better shot of what the fizzing actually looked like.  In the interest of full disclosure, that's my artwork...not one of my future Picasso's.

I love mixing it up with my kiddos, and this was certainly an easy way to add a little bit of variety to our days!
