DIY Holiday Gifts Part II

Yesterday, I shared with you some of my favorite homemade, edible holiday gifts. Today, I have some options that may be good for those on your list that are a little more waistline-conscious. The first are these personalized wine glasses:

They were actually pretty easy to do, although admittedly, I have yet to master the craft yet and will hopefully be able to make some that look a little more professional soon. I was inspired by a post on one of my favorite blogs, Young House Love. To conquer my project, the first thing I did was purchase some pretty wine glasses from Pier 1 ($6 each) and some Armour Etch from the craft store ($12 for the bottle). On my first attempt, I printed out the names from the computer (I used the Elephant font) and then traced the name on to painter's tape with an Exacto knife. I share this method with you because I think it would have been the better option if the glasses weren't so full-figured! But because they were, it was nearly impossible to get the painter's tape to lay flat on the glasses, creating ugly smears and bleeds on my first attempts. My last ditch effort, then, was just to use a thin paint brush and hand paint each name on to the glass with the Armour Etch. No matter which method you choose, it is really important to put the solution on in an even, THICK layer. I let it sit for 10 minutes, even though the bottle only says 5, and was pretty happy with the result (although I do wonder if leaving it on for longer would etch it in deeper?). Anyway, like I said earlier, I am pretty pleased with the final product and excited at the possibilites for other gift and home decor ideas.
